Ms. Pigue's Fifth Grade

Challenges of Being a First Year Teacher...

What a wake up call! Whoever says teaching is easy needs to switch shoes with me for a day! I have twenty-six rough and rowdy fifth graders whom I love very much. The more I teach the more I realize that each child comes from a different background. At my school all four fifth grade classes are known for exhibiting poor behavior. I try to explain to my students that as the "SENIORS" of the school they, of all people, should display how to act. I accept the assignment of having behavior challenged students and I dedicate myself to finding a solution for the issue. Since I have witnessed that some households leave something to be desired I have devoted myself to make sure that each child feels safe within my classroom walls. I can not be with them every second of the day, but I can ensure that while they are in my presence that they will feel loved and cared about. I am not giving up on my children, and I believe that before long my class will be removed from the category of ornery fifth graders.

In addition to issues at school I find my self being challenged with too many tasks. I am a first year teacher, a new mommy, and I am presently continuing my education. Some might say I am overdoing it; however, I have always been a firm believer in applying oneself. Since I was a little girl I have attempted to set goals for myself. Even though at times I get frustrated and question whether or not I can get everything done, I always stick to my background of dedication and perseverance and keep "trucking along."
